New entrants try and show down incumbents in many ways. Price is one of them (speed, convenience, coolness etc are among others) and it is the trickiest.

Complete Genomics promised a $5000 genome but found that the big daddy of genomics (Illumina) was able to crank its price down from $50,000 faster than expected.

Complete Genomics was bought by China’s biggest (and probably the worlds biggest) genome sequencing organisation for less than the money it raised so not so great for investors but at least they got some money back.

Complete Genomics’ race to lower the costs of DNA sequencing didn’t yield business success.
